Wu Wei: Embracing the Natural Flow of Life

Imagine yourself moving through life's challenges with ease, like a leaf floating effortlessly on a stream. This suggests what it means to embody Wu Wei – harmony and balance within ourselves. Wu Wei stems from Chinese philosophy that refers to a natural flow, where life moves effortlessly and spontaneously, following a path of ease and grace. Wu Wei characteristics include:

• Relaxation: Softness spreads through the body.

• Non-force: Energy flows freely.

• Spontaneity: Movement arises naturally.

• Non-resistance: Qi flows smoothly.

• Non-intention: Goals etc. fade into silence.

• Softness: Flexibility adapts to changing situations.

• Effortless effort: Effort seems effortless, as if energy unfolds naturally.

• Natural flow: Movement and action are guided by an inner sense of natural flow.

• Harmony and balance: One may feel a sense of cohesion and balance.

• Connection to the natural world: Wu Wei often occurs in a natural setting.

Examples of Wu Wei:

  • In Qigong practice, your body moves in a natural, fluid sequence, as if it's unfolding from within. The movements emerge spontaneously.

  • As you move through the "Embracing the Moon" Qigong sequence, you feel a sense of effortless progression, as if your body is simply expressing its natural movement patterns.

  • When you're walking, your steps become light and effortless, as if you're gliding across the ground. You're moving in sync with the rhythm of life.

  • In daily life, tasks unfold with a sense of natural progression, as if they're flowing from one moment to the next. You're moving in harmony with the flow of life.

  • During Qigong practice, you notice that your breath becomes naturally synchronized with your movements, as if it's an integral part of the overall flow.

Song: The Intentional Relaxation

In Qigong, Song unfolds as a journey of cultivating inner peace and tranquility through intentional relaxation, acknowledging and exploring our emotions, and addressing physical needs. This process of self-awareness and self-care nurtures our body's natural flow of energy (Qi), fostering a sense of serenity, calmness, and contentment. For example:

  • As you move slowly and smoothly in Qigong practice, you cultivate Song through deliberate relaxation of muscles.

  • In stillness, Song arises from focused breath and quietened mind.

  • In natural poses, Song is cultivated through balanced weight distribution and intentional release of tension.

How Does Song Work?

By intentionally relaxing and calming the body and mind, we can:

  • Slow down the heart rate and blood pressure

  • Release tension in the muscles and joints

  • Decrease the production of stress hormones

  • Increase the production of relaxation hormones like dopamine and serotonin

  • Enhance the body's natural healing processes

Benefits of Song:

• Experience physical relaxation and reduced pain and discomfort

• Calm your mind and reduce stress and anxiety

• Improve your sleep quality

• Enhance your creativity and problem-solving skills

• Feel more connected to your inner self and more at peace with your surroundings

How to Practise Song:

Notice what feels comfortable and supportive for your body, and settle into that position.

Breathing Exercises:

Take 5-10 deep breaths, focusing on the sensation of the breath moving in and out of the body.

Try "box breathing" (inhale for 4 counts, hold for 4 counts, exhale for 4 counts, hold for 4 counts).

Practice "4-7-8" breathing (inhale for 4 counts, hold for 7 counts, exhale for 8 counts).

Body Scan:

Lie down or sit comfortably, and bring your attention to different parts of the body (e.g., toes, feet, ankles, calves, etc.).

As you focus on each area, release any tension or discomfort, and feel your body relax.

Repeat this process until you've scanned your entire body.

Progressive Muscle Relaxation:

Start with your toes and work your way up to the top of your head, tensing and relaxing each muscle group in turn.

For example, tense your toes for 5 seconds, then release. Tense your feet for 5 seconds, then release. Repeat this process until you reach the top of your head.

Mindfulness Meditation:

Sit comfortably with your eyes closed and focus on your breath.

When your mind wanders, gently bring your attention back to your breath without judgment.

Maintain a sense of curiosity and openness.

Physical Relaxation:

Release any tension in your shoulders by rolling them forward and backward.

Let go of any tightness in your jaw by releasing it slowly.

Feel your hands relax and sink into your lap or the surface beneath them.

Visualizations:

Imagine yourself in a peaceful environment (e.g., a beach, a forest, etc.).

Visualize yourself feeling calm, relaxed, and at ease.

Repeat positive affirmations to yourself, such as "I am calm and relaxed."

Everyday Activities:

Practice deep breathing while walking or doing chores.

Take a few moments to focus on your breath before responding to a stressful email or phone call.

Ting: Listening Within

Ting in Chinese philosophy, refers to a practise of listening and attentiveness to body sensations to cultivate a sense of inner calm, clarity, and connection. Through practising Qigong, we develop inner awareness by focusing on our "subtle" energy and our internal experience to ground, harmonize and sooth our bodily depths.

We may distinguish between two types of awareness: awareness "of" something, bound by perception; and awareness as an expansive consciousness, revealing our true essence. By embracing the latter, Ting facilitates a profound connection with our real essence.

Ting whispers the universe's subtle rhythms and our inner wisdom into our ears. This stillness precedes movement, inviting clarity and insight. By cultivating Ting, we quiet our minds and listen to our intuition, navigating life's complexities with ease.

Benefits of Ting:

• Cultivate a sense of inner harmony, clarity, and connection to our physical body

• Develop a deeper awareness of our bodily sensations, emotions, and thoughts

• Feel a sense of grounding, peace, connection, and clarity

• Awaken to a sense of self-awareness

• Respond with skill to life's challenges

Examples of Ting:

  • When you're sitting in nature, listening to the sound of birds chirping or water flowing, and feeling a sense of peace

  • When you're taking a moment to breathe deeply, noticing the sensation of the air moving in and out of your body

  • When you're considering a difficult decision, and you take a moment to pause and listen to your inner wisdom

A few humourous phrases:

This Song sounds incomplete without some Ting funny!

Song and Ting's (not real) new album: 'Vibin' with Chi' - A soothing soundscape to harmonize your energy

Song going to do some ting about this?

Ting-a-ling, Song is singing the praises of this thing!

I'd like Song of those colourful tings for my collection.

What's one Ting holding back your Song?

Have you been looking for SongTing?

Ting is: I can't sing but I can song!
